§ 50-6. Miscellaneous regulations.

  • (a)

    Driving through funeral processions. No vehicle shall be driven through a funeral procession, except fire department vehicles, police vehicles and ambulances, when the same are responding to calls.

    (b)

    Limitations on backing. The driver of a vehicle shall not back the same into any intersection or over a crosswalk, and shall not in any event, or at any place, back a vehicle unless such movement can be made in safety and until he shall have given ample warning to those who may be behind, by hand, horn or other signal.

    (c)

    Emerging from alley or private driveway. The driver of a vehicle emerging from an alley, driveway or building shall stop such vehicle immediately prior to driving onto a sidewalk, or onto the sidewalk areas extending across any alleyway, and upon entering any public roadway he shall yield the right-of-way to all vehicles approaching on the roadway.

    (d)

    Driving on roadways laned for traffic. All vehicles operated on any roadway which has room for more than one lane shall be driven as nearly as practical entirely within a single lane and shall not be moved from such lane until the driver has first ascertained that such movement can be made with safety and has given the proper signal.

    (e)

    Entering, jumping on, or riding vehicles without permission. No person shall enter, jump on, or ride any automobile or motor vehicle, without the consent of the owner or driver.

    (f)

    Persons riding must stay inside. No person when riding shall allow any part of his body to protrude beyond the limits of the motor vehicle in which he is riding except to give such signals as are required by law, and no person shall hang on to any vehicle.

    (g)

    Not more than three persons permitted in front seat. It shall be unlawful for the driver, or the person in charge, of any motor vehicle to permit more than three persons (including driver) to ride in the front, or driver's seat of a motor vehicle.

    (h)

    Gross weight on bridge. No vehicle weighing in excess of the posted gross weight limitations shall be moved over any bridge within the town.

    (i)

    Speed limit on a portion of Highway 58. The board of commissioners of the town declares the speed limit on Highway 58 from a point 1.21 miles east of SR 1193, eastward to a point 0.03 mile west of SR 1604 to be 45 miles per hour.

    (j)

    Allowable vehicles. The operation of the following motor vehicles is allowed on the public streets and rights-of-way of the town: (1) those properly licensed by the NC Department of Motor Vehicles and operated by a licensed driver; (2) golf carts pursuant to section 51-1 et seq. of this Code; (3) mopeds as defined in the NC General Statutes operated in a manner that would be legal if on a state road; (4) lawn care vehicles while actually involved in right-of-way maintenance; (5) vehicles operated by employees or contractors of local, state or federal governments during the course and scope of their duties; and (6) vehicles operated by utility crews in the course and scope of their duties.

    The operation of any motorized vehicles not mentioned in this section is prohibited on the public streets and rights-of-way of the town.
