§ 26-2. Fire hydrants required.

  • (a)

    Exemption for single-family homes. No structure, other than a single-family residential home, shall be constructed within the town until a fire hydrant has been installed and made fully operational as set out within this section.

    (b)

    Location of hydrants. The location of the hydrant shall be approved by the fire department. There shall be a hydrant located within 500 road feet of each building. This hydrant shall be located so as to be readily accessible to firefighting equipment and personnel, so that in the event of an emergency, such equipment and personnel can readily utilize the hydrant in the fighting of the fire at the structure.

    (c)

    Hydrant installation and maintenance. The fire hydrant as constructed shall be connected to a properly looped main tied into the public water supply utilized by the town, and shall be maintained in an operational condition at all times.

    (d)

    Restriction on issuance of building permits. No building permit shall be issued for renovations or repairs or alterations to any existing structure, other than single-family residences, unless and until the owner of such structure, or the applicant for the permit, complies with the terms of this chapter as it relates to the location of fire hydrants.

    (e)

    Cost of installation. The cost of installation of the fire hydrant, and the connection of the water system thereto, shall be borne by the property owner.
